How thriving Salford school is helping to train the teachers...

1/10/2019

It's not often in a school that students are busy learning maths in one room and trainee teachers are learning how to teach next door.

But that is the case at Moorside Community Primary School which offers unrivalled education for students and would be teachers alike.

As a primary school that is always striving for success and the welfare of its students, it is also the lead member of the Moorside Teaching School Alliance.

This means that the Salford-based school plays an important role within the community, whether that's helping to train new staff, providing excellent facilities or supporting local schools.

With high expectations and a commitment to every child Moorside Primary School, on Holdsworth Street, offers so much more than your average primary school.

Since moving into a state-of-the-art building back in September 2013 the school has been awarded some impressive accreditations.

The head teacher, Stephen Lawler-Smith was designated a National Leader of Education in 2016.

Alongside this the school became a National Support School in the same year and a National Teaching School in 2017.

This allowed both the head teacher and the staff to offer support and advice to other schools and achieve the best outcomes for students in the area.

Moorside Primary School prides itself on being a teaching school benefiting the children there as well as the wider community.

"Teaching schools are good/outstanding schools that work with others to provide high-quality training for new and existing teacher, as well as support for school improvement in their local area.

"They are part of a national initiative to give schools a central role in raising standards by developing a self-improving and sustainable school-led system" explains a spokesperson for the school.

There are now more than 800 teaching schools across the UK since launching in 2011.

And Moorside Teaching School Alliance has 11 schools under its umbrella, with Moorside Primary School being the lead school in the alliance.

As a Teaching School, Moorside Primary can support other establishments in various ways; including working with schools that are identified as needing significant improvement and schools which need to improve certain areas such as support for teaching and learning or key subjects.

Moorside Community Primary School takes great pride in having a varied curriculum that keeps students engaged as well as ensuring that each child can flourish.

The Swinton primary school is a three-form-entry school with 642 children from the ages of 3-11 and children can join in their early years into the nursery and progress through to reception.

Lessons are vitally important at this age when the brain is at its most active, with skills such as maths being taught through play and practical resources including board games and real life experiences.

Children are also taught important early lessons on communication, language, literacy and even Computing.

Each group in Key Stage Two has a theme that runs through the half term. Themes can include everything from The Stone Age to World War Two.

Classes in the core subjects are also expanded with pupils having an hour of English and maths a day, with lessons including poetry and classic reading as well as mental maths.

The school said: "We have large shared areas that all children have access to in EYFS / Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 and Year 6 have their own floor in the building with their own breakout area and open space.

"We have specialist full-time music and PE teachers, along with a native French speaking teacher teaching foreign languages.

"We deliver forest school lessons on site, we have astro turf, expansive playgrounds and fields for all children to play and take part in sports activities and two fantastic libraries. The children also have access to Ipads and Chrome Books too."

Communication between a school and parents is vital and is something that is actively encouraged at Moorside Community Primary School.

Last year they introduced Seesaw - a platform for pupil and parent engagement that allows clear communication so parents are updated on their child's daily life within the school.

Children can even add work onto Seesaw which can be viewed by parents and teachers so there is an instant communication channel.

Moorside also want to address larger issues in the community and are an Emotionally Friendly School.

To support both staff and pupils emotional wellbeing Moorside have implemented successful intervention initiatives such as: Pyramid Club, a Barnardos Therapist and a full-time learning mentor who works with children and their parents.

Moorside is also appyling to become a part of the Rainbow Flag Award.

The school said: "At Moorside we feel that it is our duty to equip our children with the knowledge and skills they will need for life in modern day Britain, which is why we have applied to become a part of the award.

"We feel it is important to create a safe environment for all of our pupils, staff and families.”
